MY HOME TOWN NAPIER
Napier, New Zealand’s Art Deco capital in the Hawke’s Bay. This is a city delights in the past being present. Surrounded by exceptional vineyards, and with a jaw-dropping sea frontage, this serene city offers delights for lovers of vintage, motoring, gardens, history, food and wine. Napier’s unique architecture came about after the city was razed by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in the striking deco style of the time. Napier is the only city in the world where you can find Māori motifs in its Art Deco architectural design and in February it holds the annual Art Deco Festival hosting lovers of vintage cars, music and fashion for five days in fine style.
Other attractions include New Zealand’s most important archaeological site, Otatara Pa, historic Napier Prison, New Zealand’s oldest penal institution, and the many vineyards near Taradale, Hastings, Bay View and Esk Valley. There’s also great shopping at Napier’s numerous boutiques, galleries and vintage shops. It’s a flat, walkable city, perfect for taking a guided tour to hear the story of the earthquake firsthand, but don’t let that stop you from also taking a tour of the city in a 1930s vintage car before dinner at a winery or award-winning restaurant. For garden lovers, there’s the Sunken Gardens, the Botanical Gardens, the Kennedy Park Rose Garden and the breathtaking Centennial Gardens with its 40 metre waterfall.
Napier is a beautiful experience. Its exuberance is infectious, and you’ll see touches of flair everywhere, from the stingray-inspired roof of the National Aquarium to stylish marble-topped bars.
