MY HOME TOWN AUCKLAND
Situated on an isthmus surrounded by two large harbours, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. It's home to 1.4 million people and has a population more diverse than London and New York. It's also the only city in the world built on a still active basaltic volcanic field! Each area of Auckland has its own flavour and every place is peppered with hidden gems, from the eclectic and lively central Karangahape Road, to the wild black sand beaches of the west coast.
Our guide is designed to give you a taste of what this beautiful city has to offer. We’ve laid it out in a way that suggests you start on the North Shore to discover Matakana village and amazing heritage sites before enjoying boutique shopping in Devonport. Then head West and take in the KareKare Waterfalls before enjoying the amazing collection of New Zealand’s iconic Crown Lynn ceramic ware at the Te Toi Uku Clay Works in New Lynn. The central city beckons and if you’re feeling flustered by all the choice you can take time out, in the warmer months at least, at the beautiful Parnell Baths before heading into the centre of town to pick up some clothing and furniture bargains and a great range of superb food and drink, served in beautiful surrounds. Then head east to Musick Memorial Radio Station and Ayrlies Gardens before turning south towards the Botanic Gardens and the legendary Otara flea market. Finally, like an exclamation mark, the Manukau Heads Lighthouse stands at the entrance to the Manukau harbour – if you haven’t visited, we recommend you do, and take in the view back towards our beautiful city.
