Here's to you Ol' Blue Eyes...

One of Frank Sinatra’s favourite toasts to make with glass in hand was ‘May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.' If Ol' Blue Eyes were still alive, he would be celebrating his 100th birthday this year and on Friday the 20th November, The Civic is hosting Sinatra - The Centenary Celebration to commomorate the life, times and songs of the legendary performer.  

With the Auckland Jazz Orchestra accompanying Rick Michel who has performed with the likes of Bob Hope, Rich Little, Mickey Rooney and performed for Tony Curtis, Steve Allen and Frank Sinatra himself, and Liam Burrows, recently named Best Jazz Artist at the MusicOz Awards, this is sure to be one night not to miss!

VIP Premium Gold ticket holders will be treated to a truly lavish experience before the show and be transported back to 1963 at the Copa Room in The Sands Hotel in Vegas where the Rat Pack ruled. 1. Frank was actively against racial discrimination and prejudice. In 1945, he made a short film, The House I Live In, that spoke out against anti-Semitism and racial intolerance. Sinatra refused to play in Las Vegas, Nevada, hotels and casinos where African-Americans could not entertain or patronise. He was such a money-maker for the entertainment industry with immense clout, that his efforts spurred increased racial desegregation in the state.
2. When his only son, Frank, Jr., was kidnapped and the kidnappers demanded that Frank, Sr. call from untraceable pay telephones, he began a life-long habit of carrying a roll of dimes (the cost of a pay-phone call at that time) in his pocket. He is even reputed to have been buried with a small roll of dimes.
3. His drink of choice was a mix of four ice cubes, two fingers of Jack Daniel's whiskey, and a splash of water. "This is a gentlemen's drink," he once said. And if you want to hold the drink like Frank, don't touch the rim. Cup it in your hand, insulated by a cocktail napkin.
4. We all know Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Peter Lawford and Sinatra as The Rat Pack, which was a term coined by actress Lauren Bacall. However, the guys actually liked to refer to themselves as The Summit, as they played at a 1960 summit meeting in Paris between some of the top world leaders.
5. In the 1940s, Frank – or Frankie, as he was then known – became one of America's first teen idols. Not to downplay his amazing voice and his ability to excite the female throngs, but the bobbysoxer craze he incited had a little help. Sinatra's publicist George Evans auditioned girls for how loud they could scream, then paid them five bucks and placed them strategically in the audience to help whip up excitement.
