Hot on the heels of playing the Glastonbury Festival, roots rock 'n' roll siblings Kitty, Daisy and Lewis will be back on our shores next week for their fifth tour of the country. Daisy (left) and Kitty off stage at Glastonbury (photo via Instagram) Firm favourites with New Zealand audiences as their previous sold-out tours will attest, the British trio Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, famous for their rockabilly looks and love of vintage sounds, has built a reputation as one of the best live acts around. This is thanks to a decade of solid gigging which has seen them headline major theatres and festivals around the world as well as opening for the likes of Coldplay and Stereophonics. Their new album fittingly titled The Third was recorded through the summer of 2014 in a converted former Indian restaurant in north London and produced by long-time fan and former Clash member Mick Jones (who makes a great cup of tea, says Kitty). The Third, recorded on analogue gear (like the previous two albums) embraces their growing spread of influences – from blues, rockabilly and country to soul, funk and reggae, but retains that unmistakable Kitty, Daisy & Lewis sound – a heady mix of old-school rhythms and Ska-infused grooves and a dash of Hawaiian flavour and has been hailed by critics as their best yet. On the eve of their New Zealand tour, Claire Gormly had a quick chat to Daisy Durham... Your third album shows a range of influences. If you could wave a magic wand who would each of you love to play with from the past of music? "I would probably choose T-Rex. I reckon we could get a good jam going. Plus Marc Bolan is hot". Do each of you contribute equally in the creation of a song? "We typically write our songs separately and then develop them together. Everyone has an equal say but we dont always agree with each other – which can cause conflict. A lot of it is developed through jamming and just finding what naturally rocks and feels right". You each have quite a distinct style of dressing - What is your wardrobe like? Do you have a fashion inspiration from the past? "My wardrobe is a mixture of new and old. I am really into the '70s – a lot of denim, suede, leather and lurex. My favourite items at the moment would have to be my black leather shorts worn with a hand carved belt – made by myself and my over the knee boots. I also love my flares that I bought from Primark. My boyfriend and I both bought them in white and dyed them green. I am influenced by so many peoples' fashion - Marc Bolan, Blondie, Suzi Quatro and Elvis are the main ones for me". Daisy's style icons from left to right: Marc Bolan, Blondie, Elvis and Suzi Quattro What are your thoughts on the current trend for all things vintage and retro? "I think its nice that people are discovering old styles and being creative with it. I think it is important to wear what makes you happy and not to just follow what they think is cool. I'm not keen on a lot of the repro stuff. I think it is pretty unoriginal". Glory Days magazine has a double pass to Kitty, Daisy & Lewis in each city to give away. The New Zealand tour dates and ticket outlets are... 28th July Christchurch - Allen Street (www.undertheradar.co.nz) 29th July Wellington - Bodega (www.undertheradar.co.nz) 30th July Auckland - Powerstation (www.powerstation.net.nz) So you loved the Art Deco festival in Napier in February, and are thinking about heading to the Hawke’s Bay Toyota Winter Deco Weekend. What’s the lowdown? Glory Days' Miriam Sharland offers us a glimpse of the wonderful winter getaway... Winter Deco is a low-key affair compared to February’s event, when the city is over-run with folk of all ages dressed up to the nines in their deco duds, enjoying free concerts, outdoor picnics and soapbox derbies. It may perhaps be best not to expect bevies of flappers and streets road-blocked with vintage cars during winter, but if you’re a hard-core Deco fan, or simply can’t wait a whole year to break out the beaded dress or tweed suit, then Winter Deco Weekend makes a good mini-break for the retro-minded. A small vintage car and bike parade took off at midday, led by Colin of the Loyal Haumoana Cycle Club on a penny farthing (pictured above right). We were feeling quite sad that we hadn’t brought our retro bikes but the rain started about five minutes after the riders set off, and we decided we were really glad we hadn’t brought the bikes after all! We took shelter on the cosy vintage railcar shuttle to Hastings, and there were also showings of silver screen legends in the Art Deco Centre on offer to escape the inclement weather. There was a choice of events Saturday night; we dropped into the casino in the beautiful Gatsby Room at the Masonic, to watch the high spenders of Deco-dom in their finery (pretend to) gamble away their fortunes at the tables. The ever-game Born to Move Deco Dancers were everywhere – seeing off the car parade in thin cotton dresses in the cold wind, adding an extra layer of glamour to the casino in basques and feathers, and rehearsing in the Municipal Theatre during Sunday’s backstage tour. A nice aspect of Winter Deco is that the hotels are more affordable and space is not at such a premium, and it is far easier to book events and enjoy the cafes and restaurants in the area. It’s also a good time to visit other attractions such as the Museum Theatre Gallery, where the earthquake exhibition gives a sobering backgrounder to the fun and frivolity that takes over the city during Deco weekends. For more information about the Deco events held in Napier each year. visit the Art Deco Trust website and start booking your tickets back in time now!

All That Jazz: Deco highlights from the Ruth Meier Button Collection on show from 11 July 2015 ‒ 31 January 2016, is a celebration of a heyday in button production, the Art Deco era. Selected from the private collection of Lower Hutt resident Ruth Meier, each button is a tiny work of art that reflects the time in which it was made. This exhibition gives only a sample of the over 3,000 buttons in Ruth’s personal collection, accumulated through 40 years of buying and trading in the international button market. The buttons from Ruth’s collection reflect the jutting lines and sharp shapes of Art Deco that echoed through art, fashion, design and architecture. Starting with Art Nouveau in the 1890s through to Art Deco in the 1920s to 1940s, the buttons show developing technology and fashions. As lifestyles changed so did the clothing that was worn. The invention of plastics such as bakelite and celluloid made possible lustrous new colours and extravagant shapes. ![]() “The Spirit of ’45 – Celebrating 70 years since the end of World War II” Old St Paul's 34 Mulgrave St Thorndon Wellington 25th and 26th July Swing dance to Glenn Miller tunes with the Air Force Band, sit behind the wheel of Early American Cars, re-enact the Times Square Kiss, bring the kids for a trial of 1940s toys and games, watch original footage of Wellington’s post-war celebrations, and meet some real US Marines during this action packed weekend when Old St Paul’s collaborates with the US Embassy to commemorate the end of WWII. Our Creative Director, Rose Jackson, recently visited Voodoo Molly to find out how to use the amazing chalk paint powder that every reader receives for free on page 41 of the Home Issue. In this post she shares her experience.
I have long considered myself a #diyfail but, having just spent time with Voodoo Molly at their Open Night I have transformed into a #diydream! With some generous and very knowledgeable assistance, I was able to quickly and easily remedy my previous botched attempt at painting an inherited mirror. I think it would be fair to say that my first attempt would have made my expert crafting, haberdashery store owning, night class teaching Grandma regret leaving it to me! Glory Days started chatting to Antonia from Voodoo Molly last year and we found the perfect project to collaborate on when we were planning The Home Issue The magazine was crying out for a DIY-based giveaway and we thought you, our readers, particularly those interested in doing it for themselves, would benefit from an introduction to Voodoo Molly. Antonia agreed and generously gave us enough samples of her chalk paint powder to include in every magazine. And because the story behind Voodoo Molly is such an interesting one we are going to devote a future Telegram to an in-depth interview with Antonia so you can share in her vision for a more empowered generation of do it yourselfers.. But right now we wanted to show you how easy it is to use your free sample to creatively wrap up the school holidays (for those with little ones), or fill your weekend (for those without) working on a bit of DIY. Like me, you can conquer those DIY demons and help transform something drab into something fab! Check out the Voodoo Molly Chalk Paint Makeover 101 video below...
We would love to see your before and after photos using your Voodoo Molly chalk paint powder giveaway! Head over to our Facebook page and share your #diydream projects now. To get you started here is my after - I am positive Grandma would now be proud!

Creative Director, Rose Jackson, shares news of the incredible giveaway worth over $1000 that we have to offer one lucky Glory Days reader, thanks to Hotel DeBrett... One of my favourite sections of our magazine is This Vintage Town, as it puts into paper form one of my favourite activities. I love heading to a new place and discovering all the vintage and second hand treasure and nerding out in the museums, galleries and historical sites that it has to offer. I have developed pretty good instincts for hunting this out, but sometimes I neglect to find a secret spot or two and so we decided to create a guide for our readers to avoid any missed opportunities! This Vintage Town has gone through a few incarnations, but I think we have finally nailed the look and feel that I was originally after. Our Art Director, the talented Nathalie Gregory, suggested that we turn the guide on its side and make it into a "cut out and keep" section so when Glory Days readers go travelling you can simply take your guide when you are out and about, rather than having to wrangle with the whole magazine! Here's a video that we created to show you how it works in our previous issue... For our Home Issue we had the uber-talented Danielle from Devel Men & Women writing our This Vintage Town Auckland guide. If you haven't already, check out her excellent personalised collaborations that she works on with other talented folk - many of whom have featured in Glory Days such as our new Beauty Editor, Miss Victory Violet, superstar songstress Tami Neilson and New Zealand's smoothest band leader Sal Valentine! All photography courtesy of Devel, Miss Victory Violet photograph edited by Miss T Pinups Being the sprawling metropolis that it is, Danielle concentrated on inner city Auckland for this issue and I came up with an idea to offer one lucky reader a Vintage Auckland Getaway, so they could experience first hand all the sights, shopping and secret spots that Danielle had shared. I thought who better to approach and collaborate on this getaway than Hotel DeBrett. If you are looking for luxury boutique accommodation in the heart of the city that oozes old school glamour and has character in spades, look no further than Hotel DeBrett. Originally built in 1841, the hotel has gone through many changes over the years, including a stint as the hippest place to be in the 1980s and a dubious period in the '90s that many who attended would perhaps rather forget! The current owners, John and Michelle, purchased the dilapidated building in 2007 and spent two years breathing new life into the atrium, rooms, restaurant and bars, resulting in a host of awards for its food, service and quirky décor. If there is one spot not to be missed, it is the divine House Bar (pictured above), which has been fully refurbishing in the Art Deco style that it was originally designed in. Sip cocktails here while listening to jazz in the Atrium, close your eyes and revel in the elegance and luxury of times gone by. Click here to discover more about Hotel DeBrett. Click here for all the details! Candice DeVille is an Australian-based blogger and vintage entrepreneur. In the latest edition of Glory Days magazine, she talked to Editor, Natasha Francois, about her love for full blown colour and mid century modernism and her vintage style abode. To get the inside story on Candice's decorating style and DIY projects, order yourself a copy of the Home issue available from the Glory Days Emporium. Natasha had such a great time getting to know Candice she couldn't fit it all in the pages of the magazine, so here she shares a few more insights into the lady behind Vintage Current... On blogging: It began as a means to catalogue my outfits- and how I was using the clothes in my wardrobe as a virtual database. It was a bit of a brain dump for what I was feeling at the time, I was a fairly new mother I'd been living out in the suburbs, I was terrified of becoming homogenised or being absorbed into this melting pot of suburban blah and really needed to do that to stay in touch with who I was. On her passion for new media technology: My family were very early adopters of technology and I was the kid that would play on CB radio, my dad was an electronic engineer so he taught us to make circuit boards and how to code and all that sort of stuff. I've been online since the days of bulletin board systems when I would meet guys called Phoenix up at the milkbar. On the reality of global business: I regularly have Skype meetings with people all over the world. I have to keep different world clocks in my phone constantly in order to keep up. On being a workaholic: Essentially if I'm not asleep I'm working! On her circuitous modelling career: I did a number of different deportment courses when I first started modelling I was about 19 at that stage. I didn't do very much with the modelling at that stage for a couple of reasons, one of them was that even as a size 10-12- basically I was told that I was too fat. I had a much older face than a lot of the other girls, they put me into bridal modelling. I got quite jaded pretty quickly because I realised that the only way I was going to be able to make that a supplementary career was by losing a lot of weight. I went this is not for me, it's not the career I had in mind so I left it and I didn't go back to modelling until I was 30 (she's now a vintage and pinup model). On how she got good at public speaking: A lot of theatre. I did a lot of performing and public speaking even as a child, I was used to being on stage and speaking and performing ever since the first nativity play where I had to pretend to be a sheep and they stuck cotton wool on my butt and pushed me out there and then you couldn't get me off. I went to a performing arts high school and I did a lot of musical theatre and toured around Australia. On her biggest obstacles: I'm a natural procrastinator that researches things to the nth degree so it feels like work. The other one is just overcoming a lot of things in your own mind, not comparing yourself to other people to really focus on what your own talents and goals are and not to get distracted from your own vision and path by what someone else is doing. And thirdly not letting the naysayers get your down. The internet is full of trolls and I've had my fair share of them. On being too cheerful to be a goth: I did the goth thing when I was about 16/17 and as much as I loved it , I found it really hard even being accepted into the goth community – and I would go to goth clubs and I was told I looked great but I'm a terrible goth because I smiled too much. So I kind of got kicked out of the goth thing... because I'm too happy and I don't do elitism. On other common misconceptions: People think you're not authentic or hiding behind a mask. I do get asked quite a lot do I ever go without makeup and well yeah of course I do, I don't have to wear it, I enjoy it. But it's not something that is so ingrained in my idenity that I can't go without it. On how her tastes have changed: It is interesting, it's only even been of late that I've considered looking at the seventies. I guess because I was born in the '70s- I am never going to consider looking at 80s or 90s or even thinking about those being in the same room as the term vintage. The seventies is a decade that I've always grown up thinking oh yuck how could anyone have worn that! And in the last 12 months once I saw American Hustle I got completely obsessed with that whole high glam 70s Halston look. So there may be a little of that to come... On what home means to her: Home for me is wherever I'm at peace, wherever I'm at peace sadly seems to be wherever my laptop and a Wi-Fi connection are! So I can be just as at home staying in a backpackers or in a hotel provided I've got my red lipstick and a hairbrush, my camera, my laptop and a Wi-Fi connection I'm good. On her ideal weekend: A great weekend alone is stocking up on red wine and cheese and sitting there with my laptop for the whole weekend just fiddling around with new apps and building little sites or playing with things. I also have a bit of a, not an expensive hobby, a hobby – every now and again on a Friday night, sitting down with a bottle of chardonay and buying domain names! Candice has just announced dates for her style and glamour workshops to be held in Australia in July. Click here for all the beautiful details!
