Outfit inspiration for the Blue Moon Ball...

Glory Days Editor, Natasha Francois, offers up her top ten wish list wardrobe items for the upcoming Blue Moon Ball at Hopetoun Alpha in Auckland this Saturday night. With performances from burlesque stars, music from the Rocking Roller-Coasters and Tina Turntables and a chance to be crowned Blue Moon Ball King or Queen and win some fabulous prizes, this is one event on the social calendar you won't want to miss!

It's only a matter of days before the inaugural Blue Moon Ball, brought to you by Pandora's Box Productions and Glory Days Magazine, is held at Hopetoun Alpha and if you're anything like me, you'll be freaking out about what to wear and frantically scouring your own and your friends' wardrobes for anything that could pass muster at the fifties style prom.

I realise it's probably miles too late to order anything online (plus I'm on a self-imposed spending ban) but there's no harm in trawling the interwebs in search of outfit inspiration and items to add to your wishlist is there?

1. The Prom Dress

A satin swing dress is the perfect solution for all shapes and sizes. This Stop Staring number has a nipped in waist, cute capped sleeves and a full circle skirt (perfect for twirling the night away on the dancefloor). Plus it's available up to a 3XL.

2. The Evening Gown

This 1930s scarlet silk charmeuse gown, made to order from your exact measurements by ReVamp Vintage, is an absolute show stopper! You'll certainly be the envy of all if you wear this baby to the ball!

3. The Cocktail Dress

Another jaw dropper from ReVamp Vintage! This dress is honestly just too much! The bodice is stitched in a luxurious hunter green silk velvet offset by ten layers of tulle and nylon net of the skirt. The cups of the bodice are layered with rayon taffeta, tulle, net and repeat the ruffle and spaghetti detail from the skirt that both shapes and celebrates the bust line. Want!

4. The Handbag

I have to confess I already own this exact purse, which I recently purchased from a Facebook Swap and Sell group, but alas I don't have anything that matches it to wear to the Blue Moon Ball! A fab reproduction of the vintage lucite box purses which were the height of fashion in the 50s but are becoming rarer now, this cornflower blue version features authentic looking reverse carvings and is the perfect size to stash your wallet, keys and lippie – but that's about it!

5. The Stole

For the perfect injection of '50s glamour you can't go past a stole. It also is the ideal winter warmer. There are scores of cruelty free versions around, such as this falabella faux fur leopard print stole by Reiss. Wouldn't it look amazing teamed with a black strapless prom dress and matching leopard gloves?

6. The Gloves

When it comes to gloves, the rule of thumb is: The shorter the sleeve, the longer the glove. With this mind, an elegant sleeveless gown requires an elbow length or opera length glove. Or you can jettison the rules and wear whichever length you like!

7. The Shapewear

Rago has seriously the best shapewear in the business, it's super comfortable, high quality and comes in a good array of back sizes unfortunately, the max cup size it goes up to is DD (but you can get around this apparently by ordering up). These provide the perfect degree of smoothing support under your dress, should you desire it.

8. The Coat

Here's hoping it doesn't pour down on Saturday night but knowing Auckland, there's bound to be a cold wind blowing outside so it's worth capping off your evening ensemble with a coat or jacket of some description. Velvet always says 'evening' to me and I've longer wished for a fancy black opera coat like this in my collection.

9. The Jewellery

The atomic age of the 1950s is brilliantly captured in this Starlite Necklace from Meteor Jewelry Co. I'd love this as part of a matching earring, necklace, bracelet set!

10. The Shoes

Ordinarily I don't do heels as I'm pretty un-co in them but I'd love to have these in my collection purely as objects of desire. These vinyl and diamante sandal with glass-effect heels look like they've stepped straight out of a fairytale and weren't dubbed the 'Cinderella heels' for nothing. And have you seen the amazing red and green versions they also put out?
