Born in 1979 and raised in the coastal New Zealand town of Waikanae, Steph has long been drawn to the natural world and the flora and fauna within it. The creativity in her early years took on a firmer trajectory with formal evening courses in jewellery making at age 14. This quickly progressed to 4 years of tertiary arts training in the Visual Arts, graduating at age 19 with a Jewellery Design & Manufacturing Arts Major (achieved with distinction).
A strong desire to reach for the pinnacle of traditional handcrafting techniques saw Steph learning the German language in order to complete a 2 year Masters Certificate at the prestigious Goldsmithing school in Pforzheim, Germany in 2006.
Years spent growing a client base through studio work, commissions, gallery exposure and a 2-year stint in the film industry on The Hobbit Trilogy, culminated in the opening of ‘Steph Lusted Jewellery and Objects d’Art’ Gallery & Workshop, central Wellington in 2015.
Steph creates work that crosses the boundaries of Jewellery and Art. Her treatment of materials and often unusual subject matter allows her work to possess a strong point of difference. These pieces sit between the realms of high Handcraft, miniature Sculpture and Art. Steph creates these pieces with the hope they will one day become cherished heirlooms and/or antiques of the future.
Steph’s work is held in multiple collections including Te Papa National Museum, The Dowse Museum and prestigious private collections worldwide.
