Auckland Arts Festival
2nd - 20th March
Various locations around Auckland

Check out our Telegrams for interviews with performers and artists from our Fabulous Four picks of the shows here!

The Auckland Arts Festival opens with Carabosse’s Fire Garden where you can walk amongst the flaming sculptures and be transformed.

Other Festival shows feature moments in history, how they have impacted on our world.  Such as the establishment of the Stewart dynasty between warring tribes of Scotland in The James Plays and the meeting between President Nixon and Mao Tzedong in John Adams’ opera Nixon in China. We move through time and see our world through a new lens
.
We cross cultures with Neil Ieremia and Swee Boon Kuik’s choreography on Black Grace in Changes, and Nina Nawalowalo’s Marama.  We cross borders with m¡longa from the streets of Belgium to the calle of Buenos Aires.  And John Psathas’ No Man’s Land finds one place where there are no borders.  Art forms mingle in Te Pō and The Chorus; Oedipus from Korea.  In Ruaumoko performers and artists of all ages and communities join together to become one voice
.
There are also many moments to laugh, to sing along, admire an artist and be swept away with a story. There is magic and memories a-plenty.

Art Deco Weekend 2015
18 - 22 February
New Zealand’s Art Deco capital of Napier, celebrated its annual festival this weekend just gone and we were there. Working!

Though in reality we're not entirely sure one can consider what we were doing working, it was such a lot of fun! We sponsored the costume competition in the Sound Shell and you can read about that here. We ran a hair and make-up workshop, did some fabulous hair-dos and make-up at a local hairdressers and perhaps most exciting for us, hosted The Cucumber Cinema marquee with Hendricks Gin at the Gatsby picnic. This was great fun and included what we hope will become an annual event, the Cucumber Carving Competition.

We also raffled off our second birthday hamper and will be offering our lovely readers the chance to win something similar in the coming weeks. Watch for more information about this in our upcoming blog post about the Cinema.

NZ Classic Car Show 2015
7 & 8 February

We love classic cars and we took this golden opportunity to look enviously at some of the most beautifully presented classics around. There were some beauties on show and we were particularly entranced by the antique Audis and felt better for learning that the name is an acronym for Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt. Who knew? We also stumbled upon a New Zealand design classic, the legendary Trekka. Apparently swapped for a mountain of excess butter back in the 60s, the chassis these unique autos were built on were originally designed for Skodas and there are a good number still running today. Just don't take them on the motorway! And then we saw our new favourite, the Volvo P1800. With added powered steering. If it's good enough for The Saint!

Leadfoot Festival 2015
6, 7 & 8 February

We loved attending the Leadfoot Festival for the first time this year and learned a great deal about racing up a steep hill in a range of beautiful cars on Rod Millen's custom designed and built driveway-come-racetrack, located in Hahei on the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. Day one was filled with speed excitement of a different kind, however, as near gale force winds had us holding onto our brand new gazebo for dear life, lest it flew into the path of one of the very lovely, very expensive cars racing up Rod's driveway! But we managed to keep hold of our stand for the rest of the weekend and hosted the Glory Days Pamper Parlour where we got to provide a glamorous getaway from all that tyre smoke.

We are never ones to dress down for an occasion and would love to see more people dressing up next year to match the elegance and style of the magnificent vintage machines. The Glory Days crew look forward to developing some extraordinary experiences with Leadfoot and creating an event to rival Goodwood, right here in New Zealand!
