#SECONDHANDSEPTEMBER INTERVIEW - GO JO RECYCLED STORE

Picture
What do you love about selling vintage and owning a retail store?
Being in retail means we can take part in the exchange of joy between the garments and the customers, giving a well loved piece a new story.

What are your favourite New Zealand brands, past or present?
We love all but get excited to see Hullabaloo, Paul’s Who Knew, Streetlife, Ego, Queens, Thornton Hall, Underground, Dream Girls... we could go on! .

Please tell us a love story about a favourite piece of New Zealand's fashion history that you own
My special piece is a velvet 70s Hullabaloo dress given to me when I first opened the shop by a woman in her 90s, it belonged to her daughter who had tragically died young. In that moment I understood the power and love we place in our clothes.

How much of your stock would you estimate is New Zealand made?
Our retro side is 90% NZ made whether homemade or labelled. Our contemporary side is a mixed bag.

What do you enjoy about New Zealand made pieces in particular?
The quality of the pieces shows us what a robust industry we once had here in NZ.

What should people look for when they are buying vintage clothing?
Pieces that excite them and speak to their inner nature.

If someone wanted to collect vintage clothing, where would you recommend starting from?
Start by listening to your heart. If you start asking yourself "where will I wear this?", you will probably leave it hanging in the wardrobe. Be bold and give things a go.

If people want to accessorise with vintage items, what would you recommend looking out for?
Start with scarves and bags. Pieces you can incorporate into your wardrobe with ease.

How should people care and store their vintage clothing?
Air them regularly, most damage is done when they are forgotten about in the back of the wardrobe. Moths will always go for vintage over contemporary chemically treated clothing.

Do you have any good laundry tips you could share for delicate or special items?
Carefully hand wash separately. Napisan in the sink does wonders for reviving an old piece.

Any styling tips for people wanting to incorporate vintage into their wardrobe?
We are fans of mixing contemporary with vintage and being playful with the eras to achieve your own unique style.

Unfortunately prices of new goods are now so low, they're often cheaper that secondhand. Why is it better for people invest in vintage/secondhand rather than buying new?
Buying second hand is good for the planet and keeps our fashion history alive. It gives us a way to showcase our personalities, if you’ve fallen out of love with dressing it’s time to reconnect with a walk down memory lane.
